My research on women's exclusion illuminates often ignored complexities in gender discourse, raises important issues concerning religious practices and economies, and highlights historical tensions by observing the different roles and strategies of religious institutions, practitioners, and other interested parties who work to create and maintain sacred spaces. Importantly, my work builds from knowledge of ancient history and classical sources but focuses on the modern and contemporary periods, namely, the deployment of ancient histories and practices in present-day milieus. In the fellowship period, I presented my research at a major international conference and completed a paper for publication on women's exclusion from Okinoshima. I am also revising my dissertation on Ominesan for publication, and continued to conduct fieldwork in Dorogawa.
