研究実績の概要 |
The most prominent feature of the present study is the development of a comprehensive account of Canadian Raising (hereafter CR) by use of variable rules and the concept of variation. To answer the question whether CR is evidence for or against rule ordering, a thorough understanding and explanation of CR was the most vital task. To accomplish this, I adopted the concept of variation and variable rules and proposed to treat CR as variation and explain it in terms of variable rules. By use of data, it seems to be confirmed that CR, in addition to phonological environments, is as well influenced by many other extra linguistic factors, such as ethnic origin, age, education background, and so on. With such a theoretical background, the application of rules for CR is not either 0 or 1; in other words, these rules are not categorical. Instead, the application frequencies of rules vary from 0 to 1, with exact frequencies determined by extra linguistic factors just mentioned and internal linguistic factors. The ordering of rules is as well decided both by extra linguistic factors and linguistic factors. By use of GoldVarb software, a variable format is established to show the significance of each factor and to reveal underlying complex internal relations in CR quantitatively. I take variable rules as an extension of rules; thus the discussion just noted seem to argue that CR is a piece of evidence for rule ordering and the validity of rule ordering appears to be accordingly strengthened.

理由
The study has been generally progressing as I planned. I have proposed to carry out the study in three steps. The focus of the fist fiscal year will be mainly on the first two steps, and the second year on the third step. Now, at the end of the first year, I have finished the first two steps as planned.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the second year, I will give a final review of all data collected and check whether I have overlooked any significant conclusions. The general picture seems to be clear now, but I need to have a second and also closer look at all data to find out the most important factors that will influence the final output of Canadian raising. I also need to select data again, to delete unsatisfactory data and keep the most representative ones. In addition to this, the focus of this time's study is composed of two parts: Canadian raising and rule ordering. Now it seems to be the case that Canadian raising is a piece of evidence for rule ordering. In the next step, I will also include other language phenomenon related to rule ordering into the study, and further reveal the validity of rule ordering.
