As a main task the Suigetsu varve chronology was extended to 37 m composite depth. Additionally new thin sections were sampled at the GFZ Potsdam since there were some overlap problems in the lower part of the core. Also fundamental functions for the new varve interpolation programme were developed, which produced promising results but need more work (e.g. reduction of computation time). Furthermore, facies and seismite (i.e. earthquakes layer) analysis was and is carried out. Both topics show high potential for further publications. Also micro-XRF analysis has been progressed by developing a semi-automatic correction tool for inter-core signal variability, which was applied to the Late Glacial part of the core. With respect to radiocarbon analysis a workshop on Bayesian modelling was visited at Oxford University, which allowed me to gain proficiency in the usage of OxCal software, which will be used to create the radiocarbon calibration dataset. Furthermore, a multi-proxy analysis of the Late Glacial interval utilising microfacies, micro-XRF, pollen and diatom data was carried out. As a result a paper on the internal structure of the Younger Dryas Stadial in Japan will be published early in FY2016, which for the first time shows a bi-partition of this climatic episode in Asia and suggests a dipole like behaviour within the Younger Dryas Stadial between East Asia and the North Atlantic. Results of this analysis were also presented at the EGU2016.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Finalising working version of Varve Interpolation Programme (VIP) by mid 2016. Subsequently developing “luxury” functions, such as a graphical user interface, by the end of 2016. Finalising Suigetsu varve count by end of 2016 (at 41 m: end of varved interval; at about 45 m: end of any seasonal laminations). This will be followed by varve counting of the Mondsee core, aiming for a 4 m long interval by early 2017. Creation of new Suigetsu 14C calibration dataset early 2017. Preparing publications on new VIP and 14C calibration dataset by end of FY2016. It is intended to present preliminary results from these publications at AGU2016. Additional publications on ‘Younger Dryas Stadial palaeo-climate’ aiming for mid 2016 and on ‘Palaeo-earthquake reconstruction’ in late 2016. At least one more publication based on this project is intended (microfacies analysis of Glacial sediments), but will only be published after this project has officially ended (publication in second half of 2017).
