This year I have conducted two related research topics to achieve the final goal. (1) Chirally organized fluorene-based polymers based on spiro-carbon strategy The introduction of chiral moieties on the backbone of conjugated polymers is widely used to induce helicity to the main chain of conjugated polymers. Based on our spirocarbon strategy proposed in this JSPS application, we anticipated that 9,9’-bifuloronilidene (99’BF) would become “prochiral” monomer unit to synthesize stereoregular conjugated polymers. (2) Study on the relationship between structural conformers and photophysical / electrochemical properties: 99’BF-based conjugated polymers The approach towards the synthesis of newly designed 99’-bifluorenylidene based monomers (BFFL27), which bears a twisting unit upper part. The chemical structure of BFFL27 and BFFL derivatives were characterized by NMR, MALDI-TOF MS. Polymers were synthesized through Yamamoto polymerization. The resulting polymer exhibits good solubility in conventional organic solvents, such as THF, Toluene, CHCl2 and CHCl3, etc. The molecular structures of synthesized polymers were verified by 1H NMR. The molecular weight of BFPF27 was analyzed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) with THF as eluent and calibrated against polystyrene standards. The polymers displayed a high molecular weight with Mn of 18 KDa with polydispersity (PDI: Mw / Mn) in the range of 2.1 according to the GPC analysis. The thermal stability of BFPF27 was estimated by thermogravimetric (TGA) under nitrogen atmosphere.
