研究実績の概要 |
The first year of the project has been a reading-intensive period. It has been necessary to familiarize myself with three large groups of knowledge: first, political-historical writings on the Irish Famine during the period 1845-52; second, political-historical writings on the phenomenon of hunger striking in Ireland during the twentieth century; and third, Irish literary representations (chiefly poetry) of famine and hunger from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Even though the focus of the study is contemporary Irish poetry, it has been necessary to read beyond the specific period and genre in order to be as informed as possible about the thematic context of this poetry. I now know which poets will garner major and minor attention in a study. To support the period of reading, I have made two research trips to the UK, one in July 2015, and one in February 2016. The former allowed me to consult with academics at the University of York, and the latter allowed me an extended and very beneficial period of reading time at the British Library, and the University of Sheffield, with access to articles and books I do not have in Japan. I have begun disseminating the results of my research this year, making two conference presentations: one at the International Association of Irish Literature conference at the University of York, and one at the Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities. Both experiences were very useful for gaining feedback on the initial findings of my research.

理由
The project has been slightly delayed this year, for a number of reasons: the amount of contextual reading necessary for the project was slightly larger than I had anticipated; a planned research trip to the national archives in Ireland was prevented by involvement in entrance exam committee work; and the expiration of my employment contract at Hokkaido University (in March 2017) has proved a distraction: it has been difficult to plan ahead for a nominally 3-year project knowing that my contract will expire at the end of the second year. However, despite this last factor, I hope to be able to submit at least one article for consideration in a peer-reviewed journal within the next 12 months, and to work towards submitting a proposal for a monograph to publishers.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the second year, I shall continue the reading of primary and secondary texts. I already have a large body of notes, so I am in a good position to shape the parameters of the project, in order to decide on subjects for articles and a proposal for a monograph. This year I shall formulate a timescale for the completion of the project. I plan to submit an article on the general theme of famine and hunger in contemporary Irish poetry to a peer-reviewed Irish studies journal in the second year. This will enable me to judge the interest in the project by experts in the field, and will help me decide on a proposal for a publishing contract. I hope to be able to submit such a proposal this year: the monograph would ideally consist of poet-focused chapters, with a contextual introduction. I would hope to be able to complete such a monograph within 2-3 years, depending on circumstances. This year I hope to be able to attend both the IASIL conference in July and the Japan IASIL conference in October. Both conferences would give me a valuable opportunity to consult with academics working in the field of contemporary Irish literary studies.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
I was unable to make a planned research trip to Ireland during the summer vacation in 2015 (to visit Famine museums, the national archives, and the library of Trinity College Dublin), so I was unable to spend all of the money allotted for the first year of the project. I hope to be able to use that money effectively in the second year of the project.

次年度使用額の使用計画 |
This year I plan to use the majority of the funds available to make research trips for conference presentations: to the IASIL conference in Ireland in July 2016, to the Japan IASIL conference in October 2016, and to a further international conference when I have identified one that is appropriate for the research project. I hope to be able to make a research trip to the Diet library in Tokyo some time during the first semester. Some of the money will be used to buy more primary and secondary resources (books), and other disposable items (printing paper, printing ink etc.).
