| 研究実績の概要 |
In 2016 fiscal year, we finished the collecting all the data for the project“Neurocognitive basis of Japanese language as a second language" as described below:
1) The technical error (in 2015 fiscal year) of presentation program in E-prime software for recording the behavioral data of the subjects during fMRI scanner was fixed and the data were recorded successfully.
2) 20 normal subjects for each group of Vietnamese and Chinese native speakers were recruited and participated in our study. All of them are at high proficient level of Japanese language.
Analyzing of the behavioral data revealed that there were no significant difference for the accuracy between these two groups. This indicated that there is no significant difference in proficient level of Japanese language between two groups.
The preliminary fMRI data showed that the Chinese group activated the parietal areas more strongly, while Vietnamese group produced a stronger activation of the superior temporal area. These may suggest that literacy skills of L1 are important determinants for L2 neural substrates.

理由
The recruitment of Vietnamese and Chinese native speakers at high level of the Japanese language as proven by possessing N1 certificate of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) and/or their participation in or graduation from undergraduate programs carried out in Japanese universities, and have been living in Japan for at least 6 months at the time of participating in this project, took longer time than we expected, especially for Vietnamese population. Conducting the recruitment at universities in Kyoto could not collect enough necessary number of subjects so that we had to expand the recruitment to universities in Osaka, Shiga and Kobe to collect 20 subjects in each Vietnamese and Chinese group.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
We are now further analyzing fMRI data of 20 subjects in each group and the comparison between two groups to finalize the result of brain activation pattern of Japanese language as a second language.
Finally, we summarize the data, write and publish a paper of this study.

| 次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Since September 2016, the system of payment for using fMRI device to conduct fMRI experiment has been changed. As it has just started and as in the beginning stage we could not judge the exact amount we have to pay for this fiscal year.
