We finished the fMRI data collection for 20 normal healthy subjects (age range 20-28 years) for each group of Vietnamese and Chinese native speakers. Despite having no differences in behavioral performance (reaction time and accuracy) for both picture naming (PN) and semantic decision (SD) tasks, the fMRI data showed significantly different patterns of brain activities. Chinese group showed stronger activities of both superior occipital lobes in PN task and higher activation in the left parietal lobe in SD task, while Vietnamese group showed stronger activities the left superior temporal lobe in PN task and greater activation of the left anterior superior temporal lobe in SD task. With considering that the study had matched the participants in age of acquisition and L2 proficiency level, our results demonstrated that the cultural difference of L1 influences not only the reading process but also the comprehension and speaking out (language production) of the L2. This may reflect the nature of acquisition of L2 is a kind of skill of our human being. We presented these results at the 2nd Japanese Meeting of Human Brain Imaging held at Machida (Tokyo) in Sep 7-8, 2018.This data will also be presented at the 2019 OHBM (Organization for Human Brain Mapping) Annual Meeting, which will be held at Rome, Italy in June 9-13, 2019. We’re preparing the manuscript for the publication.
