研究実績の概要 |
Data related to the primary research goal, a visual corrective feedback database, was collected during two experimental treatments, one in the spring and one in the fall, during FY29. The database was used to present feedback to English language learners studying university level English in an EFL context. The results from the spring experiment were presented in a peer-reviewed publication (Wright, 2018a). Preliminary results for the fall experiment were presented in a poster (Wright, 2018a), with additional publications to follow in FY30. During the presentation, the lead-investigator developed connections with researchers from several places, including the United States, Australia, and Vietnam. The results showed the need to redesign the database user interface, and a decreased need to provide teachers with a tablet computer as the devices have become ubiquitous. In addition, a paper was published relating to the secondary research goal, a touch-based flight simulator for use in self-directed and instructor guided language learning (Wright, 2017). Prior experiments and lessons drawn from the paper necessitated the purchase of additional equipment to facilitate more effective treatment conditions. The research design will be pilot tested in early FY30.

理由
Data showed that the user interface and functionality of the database needed to be re-, so that a greater number of users (e.g. language teachers) would adopt the technology. A technology firm was contracted to advise on the design of the internal database structure, to make a user friendly, secure, and scalable database. The database software was upgraded to allow more functionality. Co-investigator Cvitkovic joined the project to assist with database design and maintenance. An SSD drive and 3 high storage capacity iPads were purchased to assist data management. To minimize risk, the secondary project goal was implemented. Computer parts and simulation software were purchased to create an immersive simulator. Conference registration and travel were secured using project funds.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Experiments related to corrective feedback database and a touch-based flight-simulator will be conducted in FY30. Co-investigators Cvitkovic (database design, data collection) and Yoshinari (data analysis and write-up) will collaborate on the database project while co-investigators Fujimaki (data collection), Nakagawa (data analysis, write-up), and Yoshinari (simulator design) will collaborate on the simulation project. The simulation project will proceed with small-scale studies, while larger scale studies will be conducted for the database. The lead-investigator will coordinate both projects. Teaching faculty will be recruited to act as independent raters, collecting data, and completing surveys relating to the database user interface.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The research project was extended so that the corrective feedback database could be redesigned, pilot tested, and use in practical research experiments. A secondary project was implemented to minimize risk. The remaining funds will be used to disseminate research results. The additional time and extension of the use of the funds will allow the creation of a database the will be adopted by many teaching professionals. The use of iPads in simulators will add value the research project.
