Two papers were prepared for publication in international journals. The first regarded the quantitative portion of the study. A total of 149 students were surveyed, 79 of which did overseas study for one month and 70 of which did overseas study for a full year. Pre- and post-SA survey data were collected from both groups, and results from ANOVA analysis indicate that both groups achieved significant benefits in increased L2 speaking confidence and a strengthening of sense of an Ideal L2 self, while also undergoing a weakening of Ought-to L2 self. However, these improvements were often more pronounced in the long-term group. Moreover, those in the one-year program demonstrated an increase in ethnocentrism whereas the short-term SA participants experienced a decline in this measure. This paper is currently in review with a major international journal. The second paper regarded in-depth interviews with 11 students who studied overseas for a full year. The key finding of the qualitative portion of the study, reinforced by data from the quantitative portion of the study, is that the majority of long-term study abroad students experience a point of inflection that demarks two key phases of their sojourns abroad. In many cases the period before the inflection point is marked by uncertainty, lack of confidence, anxiety, loneliness, homesickness, and in some cases profound for making the decision to study abroad. This paper is not yet ready for submission but is intended for a separate international journal by mid-June 2020.
