研究実績の概要 |
Data Collection: during 2015-17 I have collected data on the use of social media by students of Japanese, using an online survey (English/Japanese) and interviews, at a number of universities in the UK and Asia.
Presentations:「ソーシャルメディアと日本語教育」at a workshop at Kochi University; ‘Enhancing Internationalization On Campus: A Case Study At Kobe University’, at APAIE 2016 in Melbourne, Australia; ‘My view of the role of Social Media in Japanese Language’ at 23rd Philippine Nihongo Teachers’ Forum held by the Japan Foundation, Manila; ‘Using Moodle to create a J-E Bilingual Learning Environment - collaborative second language acquisition’ at Bali ICJLE Conference; ‘Use of Social Media by Learners of Japanese as a Foreign Language in the UK’ the international EAJS international conference in Lisbon.
Recently created a Korean version of online survey to implement in the last phase of the research.

理由
I have amassed a body of data from the online survey and interviews, and have presented the findings at several International conferences and invited workshops. The data has been collected in Japanese and English, but after analyzing the data I gained from my fieldwork in South Korea, I have found that II need extra time to fully collect and analyse data from this country, which is a rich field for looking at the use of social media by both Korean students wanting to study abroad as well as Japanese students studying abroad in Korea. Kobe University has many exchange agreements in Korea and I intend to use these as the basis of my field work. I have prepared a Korean language version of my online survey, and interviews for this purpose.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Whilst increasing the data I can gain from students of Japanese in the UK and also international students studying in Japan, I will focus on the use of social media in Korea, as this appears to be a fruitful area of research, and I will use a newly created Korean version of my survey as well as direct interviews at exchange partners with Kobe University, where I can interview both Korean students and Japanese students on study abroad in Japan. I will analyze and collate this data into a final report and web site.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The main reason for not using all of the budget is that I had estimated that I would need assistance for analysis of quantitative data gained from the online survey. However, the creation of the survey was delayed due to the need for more qualitative data, as a result of findings from the extensive interviews carried out at various locations. It was decided to carry over the funding to the final year after my presentation at the EAJS conference in Lisbon where it became clear there is a need for more data on creation of PLE by students in South Korea, to create a balanced view of the research. The extra funding will be used for fieldwork in South Korean partner universities and to employ an assistant to analyze the data (in Korean) that will be gained from the online survey and fieldwork.
