研究実績の概要 |
FY2015 - Stage 1 (April 2015 - August 2015)
Academic literature review. Initial analysis of existing MOOCs and preliminary interviews. Researcher participation in online courses. In the initial stage of this research project the researchers conducted a comprehensive analysis of the existing literature on online course provision, online learning, and MOOCs. Preliminary data was collected through interviews with academics in Japan and overseas. Additionally, opinions were canvassed through online questionnaires. The content material and pedagogical infrastructure of existing MOOCs in Japan and overseas has been catalogued and analyzed. Key MOOC platforms analysed; Coursera, edX, FutureLearn and Udacity. Respected academics who are involved in the creation of online material and the running of online courses and MOOCs were interviewed. All data was analyzed using a multi-method approach. The researchers enrolled in free online courses to both experience and analyze the courses first-hand. Preliminary findings were presented at international conferences. Research papers were published in domestic and international journals.
Stage 2 - Part A (September 2015 - March 2016) In-depth analysis of the efficacy of MOOCs through student course participation. Secondary interviews with key academic figures. One group of students at Nanzan University was recruited to take part in online courses using the Coursera and edX platforms respectively. Data on the students’ online experience was collected by both researchers through face-to-face interviews and online questionnaires.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
FY2016 - Stage 2 - Part B (April 2016 - July 2016) An additional group of students at Nanzan University will be recruited to take part in online courses using the FutureLearn and Udacity platforms respectively. Data on the students’ online experience will be collected by both researchers through face-to-face interviews and online questionnaires. In addition to individual feedback, focus groups will be held before, during, and after the courses have been completed.
Stage 3 (August 2016 - March 2017) Post-course analysis and creation of a framework for an inter-institutional MOOC platform. The third stage of this research project will focus on an in-depth analysis of the researchers’findings on the courses such as course construction and material design. The researchers will examine students’ experiences with the four MOOC platforms. These findings will be complemented by a post-course analysis of the students’ comments (see stage 2 parts A & B).
During Stage 3 data from key MOOC figures in Japan and abroad will be collected through online quantitative and qualitative questionnaires. This data will be supplemented by in-depth face-to-face interviews with key academics who will be asked about the possibility of establishing a cooperative, inter-institutional MOOC in Japan. Preliminary findings will be presented at domestic and international conferences. Papers will also be published in domestic and international journals. The researchers intend to construct a model for the creation of MOOCs for universities in Japan.
