We developed antibodies against putative multiheme cytochromes involved in extracellular electron transfer and we developed new imaging techniques to link phylogeny with ultrastructure. Now, we can understand the fine structure aspects of cells which have not been cultivated. In ANME we found that one type (ANME-2B)carries what appears to be a polyphosphate granule, but another close relative (ANME-2A) does not. This work sets the stage for more detailed analyses of these cells - for example do all phylogenetic types express multiheme cytochromes? Our antibody work is still progressing, and we are able to continue work on elucidating the molecular basis of interspecies electron transfer during anaerobic methane oxidation from this seed funding.
