研究実績の概要 |
In the previous academic year (2015-16), with the Kakenhi, firstly I have been able to accomplish my field-trips to several very important film festivals such as the Beijing Independent Film Festival, Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, and the Nippon Connection Film Festival at Frankfurt, Germany. Not only I have collected data and conducted interviews at the festivals, which would be crucial to my research agenda, also I was able to reflect upon my trips and publish my festival reports timely at online journals such as "Senses of Cinema" and so forth. Secondly, within Japan, I was able to travel to cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto to participate research workshops and panel discussions on Chinese independent cinema and Asian film festival to interact with domestic scholars and filmmakers from China. Importantly, I was able to participate international conferences such as American Comparative Literature Association and Society of Cinema and Media Studies to present different parts of my research to a more international academic audience and to get their feedback. Thirdly, during this period I have also published one journal article titled “A Genealogy of film festivals in the People’s Republic of China:‘Film Weeks’ during the ‘Seventeen Years’(1949-1966)"at New Review of Film and Television Studies, for its March 2016 issue. Besides, there are also several book chapters that are scheduled to be published in 2016 or 2017.

理由
There are several reasons that I believe my project is progressing smoothly. Firstly, I have been able to travel to several film festivals according to my original plan and produce satisfactory festival reports, which laid solid basis for my research and writing in the next stage. Secondly, I was able to participate both domestic and international conferences and workshops to engage academic discussions and reflect upon my own research output. Those feedbacks have also inspired me how to improve my writing and theorization. Thirdly, there were chances for me to publish chapters or journal articles as part of the overall Kakenhi project. Currently most of the publications are in English. With this said, I hope I would dedicate more energy and time to my monograph in the second year of the project.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the second and third year of the Kakenhi project (2016-2017; 2017-2018), I would mainly focus on the theory-building and also the accomplishment of monograph. Not only I would use part of the funding to expand my academic resource and film (DVD) collections, I would also continue to travel to international conferences to present some of the newly-accomplished research output. Also I would dedicate to some academic collaborations that highlight the Chinese independent cinema and independent film festivals. At the same time, fieldtrips to important Asian film festivals would be continued as well. For instance I plan to visit Taiwan International Documentary Film Festival and South Korea's DMZ International Documentary Film Festival to observe the ecologies of Asian documentaries in 2016. At these film festivals and beyond, more intensive interviews would be conducted with film festival professionals such as programmers and filmmakers.
