研究実績の概要

Work during FY2017 was focussed on the characterization of the Nickel Phosphorus (NiP) coated guides. The initial plan was to determine the Ultra Cold Neutron (UCN) depolarization probability per bounce on the surface of the guides. An issue with the apparatus needed for this experiment made us change our plan. We determined the UCN transmission (per meter of guide) which is another important parameter for UCN guides. The experiment has been performed in December 2017 at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Switzerland. Preliminary results were presented during the JPS annual meeting in March 2018. The best achieved transmission of stainless steel (SUS) guides coated with NiP is 97%/m with an important difference regarding the roughness of the tested guides. The SUS guide with the worst roughness only reached a transmission of 70%/m. The transmission of a titanium guide (UCN absorber) with NiP coating was measured to be 50%/m.
