研究実績の概要 |
<Background> Physical activity is viewed as a powerful tool for the prevention of non-communicable diseases and the promotion of healthy aging. In the era of smart technologies, the evaluation of physical activity does not rely anymore on the only waist-worn accelerometers. Smartphones, wrist-bands, smartshoes, etc., bring new sensing and computing capabilities. The present work consisted in developing a floor vibration step-count system, which could be implemented in smart-home kits. <Method> Four accelerometers were installed on the floor of the experimental OchaHouse (50m2). Floor vibration data were acquired during walking and housework activities. An original step-count algorithm has been designed to process floor vibration data. Eight adult subjects participated in the cross-validation experiment, which consisted of mimicking routine activities usually completed at home. The floor vibration predictions were compared to the one of 5 commercial waist- and wrist-worn pedometers. <Results> The subjects walked an average of 125 ±18 steps. The floor vibration system estimated the number of steps with an average mistake of 2 ±10 steps. The commercial pedometers were equally or less accurate (-3 ±9; -28 ±17; -31 ±10; -36 ±15; -46 ±15). <Conclusion> Counting steps using floor vibration is feasible and accurate. Floor vibration sensing could be regarded as an alternative method to assess indoor physical activity, so that people could be free of wearing any device when they are at home. These results need to be confirmed for longer experiments, and with more subjects.

3: やや遅れている
理由
Time conflict with other academic duties as well as the lack of graduate student or research staff engaged on the overall OchaHouse project caused a slight delay if we refer to the initial plan. In order to solve this problem, one graduate student will be assigned to the OchaHouse topic. One research assistant may also be hired to help with the experimental and data processing job. Despite this minor delay, the project is making progress and the outcomes are promising so far, bringing valuable indications to plan our future works.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The promising observations we have done open the door to the development of smart home applications dedicated to the evaluation of physical activity at home. The on-going experiments aim at developing a standardized floor acceleration index for further prediction of inhabitant energy expenditure. The future works will consist of: -Installing less sensitive (and also cheaper) accelerometers to test them against the current system in order to address the commercial potential. -Designing an algorithm able to recognize activities. Artificial neural network methods may be considered here. -Designing an algorithm able to assess the activity intensity in order to predict the housework-related energy expenditure. We also plan to perform longer experiments.
