血管壁の内皮細胞表面に存在する糖鎖層(glycocalyx)の生理的意義に関して、流体力学的観点から研究を行った。近年実験により得られた糖鎖層のナノスケールの3次元微細構造を基に数理モデルを作成し、それを用いてまず、血液と血管外組織間の物質輸送における選択透過性について調べた。物質輸送の程度を表す輸送係数(透過率、反射率)を、流体力学・熱力学に基づいて定式化し、数値解析により溶質のサイズの関数として評価した。得られた輸送係数を動物実験の測定結果と比較すると、透過率、反射率ともこれまでにない良好な一致が得られた。このことから、糖鎖層は血管壁を介した溶質透過性に分子フィルターとして働き、溶質サイズによる選択的透過性に最も主要な役割を果たしていることが強く示唆された。次に、媒質の輸送に関して、血管内腔から糖鎖層を通り、内皮細胞間隙を経て血管外組織へと繋がる一連の経路をモデル化し、その経路を流れる流体(水)の運動を解析した。その結果、糖鎖層の流体抵抗は従来の研究に比べて1桁程度小さいことが分かった。このことは、媒質の輸送係数であるろ過率は、内皮細胞間隙の幾何形状のみで決まり、糖鎖層はほとんど寄与しないことを示唆している。また、流路および溶質が表面電荷をもつ場合について、溶質の移動と媒質の流れを解析した。解析結果から、流路表面と溶質が同符号に帯電していると、反射率が増加して、浸透圧による媒質の移動が促進されることが定量的に分かり、糖鎖層のもつ負電荷が物質輸送に大きな影響を与えることが理論的に示された。最後に、流れが内皮細胞表面および血球に及ぼす応力分布を解析した。その結果、内皮細胞表面に働く壁応力は、糖鎖層が存在することにより内腔側が極めて小さくなるのに対して、細胞間隙側は高分子の有無に関わらず格段に大きくなる可能性が示唆された。
