本研究プロジェクトは事象構造に認知類型論的なアプローチから分析を加えることにより、日英語における構文と事象構造の相関性についての類型論的な違いを明らかにすることを目的として計画された。特に、次の3つの仮説を検証することが本研究の中心課題であった。(1)事象構造はいくつかの基本的な概念スキーマを元に形成される。(2)事象構造は動詞の意味と構文のインターフェイスである。(3)構文と事象構造の相関性には日英語間で類型的な相違がある。このプロジェクトに参画した3名はこれらの課題について精力的に研究を進め、4年間の研究期間に、21編の論文と3冊の著書をその成果として刊行した。その中で、(1)に関して明らかになったのは、日英語の受身構文、移動・変化構文、結果構文などについて事象構造のスキーマが提示された。また、(2)の動詞の意味については、生成語彙意味論のモデルを用いた動詞の意味とそれが共起する名詞との意味合成についての論考を発表した。これによって構文という概念と動詞意味論との関わりに新たな知見を加えることができた。さらに、(3)に示した認知類型論的な観点から、事象構造を用いた比較研究をおこなった。研究分担者の堀江と上原は、認知言語学的な視点からの類型論の研究をおこなった。特に主要なテーマのひとつとして認知言語学的な観点、あるいは機能論的な観点から「主観性」の問題を取り上げ、認知主体が事象を言語に表現する際の類型論的な相違に着目した研究を進めた。
