研究実績の概要 |
Dr. Walen has successfully built an UHV chamber in order to grow h-BN films on a metal substrate, followed by optimizing h-BN film growth condition. Finally, she fabricated a well-grown h-BN monolayer islands on a Cu(111) single-crystal surface. The quality of h-BN monolayers was then analyzed and confirmed by LEED, XPS and STM. The h-BN monolayer growth was tested to examine if it is applicable to electronic decoupling between a molecular adsorbate and metal substrate. Single molecule fluorescence measurement is the most powerful method to do that, because fluorescence cannot be measured if the coupling is not enough. She measured a weak fluorescence signal from a free-base phthalocyanine molecule on the h-BN/Cu(111), which implies that the electric decoupling is not enough.

理由
It is crucial to introduce ultrathin insulating film between the molecule and metal substrate. Dr. Walen has successfully fabricate an well-defined insulating h-BN monolayer on the Cu substrate. Although it turned out that the monolayer was not enough to decouple electronic hybridization between molecular orbital and metal d band, she found that multilayers of h-BN might be able to be used as a good insulater.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Multilayer of h-BN will be fabricated on Ni single-crystal surface, because Cu surface allows only a monolayer film. Single-molecule fluorescence measurement from a free-base phthalocyanine molecule on the multilayer h-BN/Ni(111) will be carried out for examining electronic decoupling. Finally, TMD layers will be transferred on to the multilayer h-BN/Ni(111) to investigate local electronic structure.
