研究実績の概要 |
Our work focused on developing distinct components of our main project, "Understanding Welfare Politics in Northeast Asia with Multiple Cleavages". Through different workshops, we received feedback on the overall theoretical framework, the gendered aspects of welfare politics, and how social welfare is distinct from other cleavages (e.g. urban-rural divisions). These venues include the Institute of Social Science (University of Tokyo), Waseda University, and SciencesPo (France).
Building on input from scholars in Asia and Europe, we submitted a detailed proposal, “Convergence versus Divergence of Mass-Elite Political Cleavages”, for the 2018 European Consortium of Political Research Joint Session (Nicosia, Cyprus). We propose to gather over twenty scholars at the largest political science convention in Europe, in order to share empirical insights and develop new methodological approaches.
In addition, we have been preparing a new paper, to be presented at the European Political Science Association in June 2017, that focuses on our overall theoretical framework.

理由
We have been ahead of schedule in collecting legislation data in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, because of the support of excellent research assistants who are fluent in Korean and Mandarin Chinese. Thanks to the support of JSPS, they have collected valuable information regarding every legislation before 1987.
We have also written a workshop proposal (the ECPR Convention mentioned above), where we hope to spotlight the importance of studying Japanese welfare politics to a global audience.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
First, to examine the ideological flexibility of political actors on different cleavage issues, we will conduct elite interviews of academics, journalists, and NGOs and interest groups in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. We will use a snowball sampling method, which starts from a small pool of initial informants and, through their networks, finds relevant people with specific knowledge. Second, we will present distinct parts of my key project. We will present a methodological paper “Multi-level Cleavages and Party Politics in East Asia” at the European Political Science Association meeting (June 22-25, Milan, Italy). In addition, we will present substantive findings on East Asian welfare politics (twice at the National Taiwan University in May and one at Gakushuin University in June).
