Optogenetic stimulation of SuM terminals did not impair social behavior, but we found that inhibition of these projections leads to profound deficits in spatial working memory and context novelty detection. In vivo recordings during T-maze behavior combined with optogenetics revealed that the silencing of these inputs impairs trajectory specific firing rate modulation of CA1 pyramidal cells in a manner that correlates with changes in behavior. These data establish that SuM input into the DG serves as a novel modulation of hippocampal spatial memory. We are currently conducting analyses to understand how these phenotypes relate to alterations in hippocampal oscillations and dynamic information routing in the circuit.
