研究概要

真核細胞の基本的な作動原理を、その成立に深く関わったミトコンドリア・葉緑体の進化や機能に注目して研究した。動物・菌類を除く多くの真核細胞系統が一旦は葉緑体を持っていたとする'超植物界仮説'を提唱すると共に、共生由来オルガネラである葉緑体からのシグナルが、植物細胞周期の開始に必須であることを示した。さらに、細胞内に共存する3種ゲノムにおける遺伝情報の発現協調機構の解析などを通じ、原始的な真核細胞シゾンをモデル系とした細胞生物学の新分野を切拓いた。
