研究実績の概要

The purpose of our research is to develop a flexible Interactive Modular Screen System (IMSS), designed to be adaptable so that it can be attached to a variety of new and existing structures, in a more cost effective and easily maintainable way.

The first challenge, in order to meet that purpose, was to develop a design scheme that could maximize the potential for adaptability and flexibility. There were two main design issues to consider, (1) the flexible movement of the screening module, and (2) the adaptability of the attachment system. During this first year of our research, we were able to generate a design scheme that we feel effectively addresses both of those issues.

We created a design for the screening module that maximizes its movement. Rather than rotating about a single axis, we added a second rotational axis. This allows the screening module to be positioned in any direction, and thus maximizes its potential for effective screening. We also developed a design scheme for a cable “truss” attachment system, which we feel will minimize its visual impact and maximize its potential for adaptability.

理由

During the 2016-17 fiscal year, we initially utilized computer modeling software to develop and evaluate various design concepts. We also made some preliminary physical prototypes. During the 2017-18 fiscal year, we will primarily focus on the development of the design through physical prototyping, utilizing 3D printing and various physical materials.

We feel that the design scheme we have developed has great potential, but it is also technically complex. There are many details that must be worked out for the modules to achieve a smooth, consistent, double axis rotational movement. The strength of the modules and the actuators to withstand wind resistance is also a concern. We plan to develop two types of physical prototypes, one at full-scale to test and improve its movement and strength, and multiple prototypes at a smaller scale in order to test the control of synchronized movements.

今後の研究の推進方策

This research period will begin by developing the design and testing it with various materials & construction methods. It will be an iterative process that will require the development, redevelopment and refinement of the design and its details.

- Spatial Design (Associate Professor Verl Adams and Assistant Professor Shin Tsuchiya) will focus on: development and refinement of the details of the prototype, manufacturing and production of the structural components of the modules, and testing the modular screens for structural stability.

- Interactive Art and Interface Design (Professor Kumiko Kushiyama and Associate Professor Tetsuaki Baba) will focus on: the manufacturing and production of the electrical components of the modules, testing the dynamically controlled screens, and adding additional media technologies such as LED lighting and heat/light/motion sensors.
