There is joint work with Masayoshi Hayashi (U Tokyo) and Masashi Nishikawa (Aoyama Gakuin) dealing with Meiji-era municipal mergers. This project involves the use of 19th century data as well as computational techniques. An electronic version of the historical data exists, but we discovered that a fairly large number of data entry errors had been made during the transcription of the database. At the same time, we discovered that during the Showa period, an edition of the original data had been prepared. We paid a data entry firm to digitize the Showa edition of the data, resulting in two copies of the data. We then hired an RA to examine the cases where there were differences between the original version and this new version of the dataset. We have completed half of this last step: the result will be a database of 19th century municipal data with a close to zero error rate due to the double entry approach. The paper using this data was submitted to the Review of Economic Studies. We received a "reject and resumbit" decision, with positive referee reports. We plan to resubmit the paper to Restud in the coming year.
A second project consists of using the same techniques to examine changes in political boundaries in Europe. This is joint work with David Schonholzer (UC Berkeley grad student) and involves the use of a large commercial dataset describing national boundaries in Europe over the past 1000 years, at a month-by-month level of detail. We completed an initial working paper version of this paper, and aim to submit to journals within the next few months.
