I was able to purchase or complete scanning of primary materials, the journals NIPPON, FRONT, ‘Berlin Rom Tokyo’ among others, some of them found in German archives (Mannheim and Heidelberg Universities), as well as at the Tokyo Photography Museum Library. Discussions with Prof. Dr. Martin Kraemer (Heidelberg University) and Prof. Dr. Evelyn Schulz (Munich University) greatly helped to shape some cultural aspects of my approach towards propaganda and gender in World War II. I was invited to present my research at the Symposium ‘Modalities of Interwar Globalisation’ funded by the Volkswagenstiftung, in Hannover, Germany, where I commented the panel on ‘Christianity, nationalism, gender equality’. I also gave a full paper about wartime propaganda and gender at the Joint East Asian Studies Conference, SOAS, University College London, UK. I published two research papers, one in English with prestigious Amsterdam University Press, in the volume ‘Eurasian Encounters’ edited by Kikuchi Yoshi and Carolien Stolte, in which I trace the common trajectory of propaganda journals in Germany and Japan. In Japanese, I published an article ‘Placing Asia at the Centre’ that deals with questions of gender and wartime responsibility as well as the historical positioning of Japan within Asia. Importantly, I was able to write up and have proofread three of the six chapters of my book project on gender and visual propaganda in wartime Japan.
