研究実績の概要 |
This 3-year project investigates the phonetic typology of the interaction between tone and depressor consonants. These results of this project will show the phonetic bases for phonological depressor consonants, and how these characteristics interplay with cognitive aspects of depressors in language with or without phonologized consonant-tone interaction. So far, acoustic and articulatory data have been conducted in order to investigate the mechanism of depressor consonants in these languages. During 2017, analyses of Xitsonga and SiSwati data have been done by research assistants (RAs). More production data from Japanese, Xitsonga and Tshivenda have been collected in November 2017. Preliminary results of data analyses have been disseminated at two phonetic conferences.

理由
From December 2017, the research team has been catching up with the analyses by investigating focused area of sounds. The concentrations on Xitsonga and SiSwati meant that there has been a delay in Japanese data collection. We are still in the process of completing the analysis, but we plan to complete it before heading to field and run perception experiments in the summer.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In 2018, Perception data of Xitsonga, SiSwati and Japanese will be collected with SuperLab or E-prime using various tests; an identification task will be designed to learn listeners' sensitivity to the effect of consonants on pitch from modified stimuli, and an ABX task will show whether listeners have categorical knowledge on consonant-tone interaction. A gating experiment will also be conducted to test listener's judgments on phonetic variables that are gradient. The perception results combined with the production data will be presented at domestic conferences. The last phase of the project will be devoted to disseminating the results in international journals on phonetics.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Majority of the amount will be used to annotate large data collected in the field, which requires a lot of time by research assistants. While acoustic data has been processed about 70 %, EGG articulatory data has not been fully annotated. As such, this fund will enable the data processing.
