To achieve the research purposes, we first explored the efficacy of the CEFR-J reading and listening scales as a platform for test development. The developmental processes of the test specifications and the actual tests helped us to examine the efficacy of the reading scales for the development of test specifications and actual tests.
In the 2nd year, we continued to develop reading and listening tests. We then examined the hierarchical constructs of L2 listening and reading skills depicted in the CEFR-J scales using the large test data resulted from multiple administrations of the tests. We examined the linguistic and statistical qualities of the test items and their pertinence to the scale descriptors. We presented the research findings at an international conference.
We spent the final year of the project further developing test items, analyzing test data, and disseminating the research outcomes at international conferences. We also published some of our works in academic journals. We developed more listening items for the entire levels and reading items especially for the B and C levels in the CEFR-J scales. This time, however, we were not able to examine the statistical quality of these newly developed items due to funding and time limitations. These items were nonetheless included in the existing item pools for future adaptation. In this year, too, we actively participated in the academic opportunities to disseminate the research. We presented the findings at two international conferences and published our works in different academic journals.
