研究実績の概要

In Japan I have been working in collaboration with a Tokyo NPO: I attended (and interviewed people at) their summer camp, a discussion session with teenagers, an all-day event of medical doctors and patient advocacy groups, and the first Asian Alliance on Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis (AAFAA) that the NPO organised. I also attended the International Alliance on Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis meeting of patient advocacy groups with the NPO and have gained permission to join their next meeting. In the UK, I spent a month interviewing individuals and finding out more about the work on Anaphylaxis Campaign, a large UK charity that focuses primarily on food allergy and anaphylaxis. Since receiving this funding I have been able to present my preliminary findings at two domestic academic conferences and one international conference. Furthermore, I currently have an article under review at the Japanese Review of Cultural Anthropology.

理由

I was able to formally interview nineteen people in the UK and about twenty patients in Japan. In addition, I have been able to do in-depth participant-observation fieldwork in Japan through the NPO I have been collaborating with, as well as making connections in the UK. Through attending the International Alliance for Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Alliance I have also been able to meet the leaders of patient advocacy groups in twenty countries. As a result my research is progressing well.

今後の研究の推進方策

In 2017 I will continue to collaborate with the Tokyo NPO. I will be attending the summer camp in August and organising a workshop for teenagers with food allergies whilst there. I will conduct follow-up interviews with parents of children with food allergies and interviews with new camp attendees. I will also be attending other events the NPO puts on throughout the year. In the UK I will conduct follow-up interviews with people I interviewed in 2016 as well as finding new interviewees (hopefully twenty more interviewees) through my links with Anaphylaxis Campaign. I will also be attending two large medical conferences with the Tokyo NPO where I will do research on the interaction between patient advocacy organisations and the medical community.
