研究実績の概要 |
This study aims to evaluate the performance and the communication style of journalists-interviewers during televised political interviews, and to assess their function in the political process in Japan. For this purpose, data was collected during 2016~2017 from four nationally-broadcast television programs: Puraimu Nyusu (Prime News), Shin Hodo 2001 (New Broadcast 2001), Gekiron Kurosufaya (Gekiron Crossfire) and Nichiyo Toron (Sunday Debate). Interviews from these programs for this particular study were carefully selected based on detailed criteria. Interviews then were recorded using a DVD recorder. A verbatim transcript was made of each selected interview. Based on a methodology used by the chief researcher in previous research in Japan, criteria for identifying questions and responses were determined. Two coding sheets were devised for analyzing the structure and verbal content of the interviews: the first for interviewers' questions. The second coding sheet was devised for interviewees' responses. During last year data was collected from 120 interviews selected from the above-mentioned four television programs. Of these, 90 interviews were with politicians (72 members of the Japanese national Diet, 18 from the local level), and 30 from non-politicians. The number of identified questions was 2,422 (politicians were asked 1806 questions (74.6%), non-politicians 616 (25.4%). This data is analyzes during the last few weeks to obtain the research designed goals.

理由
Considering the processes of both data collection and initial analysis of the data it can be said that at present this study is progressing rather smoothly. As for the data collection: As planed data was collected from 120 interviews selected from four television programs. Of these, 90 interviews were with politicians (72 members of the Japanese national Diet, 18 from the local level), and 30 from non-politicians. The number of identified questions was 2,422 (politicians were asked 1806 questions (74.6%), non-politicians 616 (25.4%). Regarding the data analysis: The interviews were coded according to two coding sheets designated for this study and reliability tests indicated the inter-coders high level of analysis. I am working now on building a model on the interaction between questions and answers. This model consists of the content of interviewers' questions (regarding knowledge of events, personnel affairs, political parties, political processes, political commitments, and issues) in addition to the attributes of the respondents (including such factors as gender, age, ruling parties' politicians, opposition parties' politicians, local level politicians, and non-politicians).

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the subsequent research, I will try to refine further models of the interaction between interviewers and interviewees. In addition, I will attempt to clarify how rhetoric is utilized in Japanese politics and in particular the role played by interviewers in Japanese political communication in comparison to their counterparts in other democracies. When refinement the above mentioned models, I will consider the positions and role played by politicians in government and in their political groups, including affiliation with certain political camp, and how these affect the interaction with interviewers. Also, since it is expected that the optimal model will differ depending on the parameters examined in the replies to answers, I will try to analysis the data according to the extent that interviewers' replies were clear and direct replies to questions, two important factors in the Theory of Equivocation, examined in this study. An important implication in this sense is that related analysis can reveal on the nature of the interaction between the interviewer and the interviewees: What questions are asked and how they are asked, to what questions politicians wouldn't reply and what type of rhetoric they used when presenting their replies. By conducting such discourse analysis, the study will present also ideas on the role played by interviewers in Japanese political culture and the way they affect political discourse in this country.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
This is because the individuals who did the transcriptions of the interviews got enthusiastic in their work and ended earlier than the planed schedule for this year. In the next fiscal year, as in this fiscal year, I plan to use personnel expenses for such goals as analyzing the interviews data, and building the above-mentioned models. In addition, expenses will be used for statistical analysis software (IBM SPSS Statistics), and for editing/rewriting papers before presenting them in international associations and in international journals and books. For that matter part of the expenses will be used to participation in international scientific meetings and for collaboration in research with Europeans and American colleagues.
