研究実績の概要 |
This year I made two visits to Shanghai and met with collaborators at New York University in Shanghai to learn more about the digital ethnography technologies they are using. I also conducted fieldwork in Shanghai that will be used in the Shanghai version of the project. We organized visits from NYU Shanghai to help plan our digital ethnography efforts in Tokyo. We hired a web designer in Tokyo who created a page for us, and we created a page for the Tokyo portion of the digital ethnography projecting, as well as a prototype for the mapping function, which will be improved upon next year. We conducted ethnographic interviews and have uploaded 26 in-depth case studies to the Tokyo-centered website called "Nishiogiology." This website has received thousands of visitors this year. I also presented this work at conferences in Hamburg, Duisburg, Shanghai, Paris, North Carolina and New York City. We are creating a network of collaborators on urban food research, and using this digital ethnography platform has proven to be a useful way to generate interest and share findings in the underlying urban sociology project as well as way to present the data in a novel accessible fashion. Finally, we have used the project to generate community ties and gain feedback from community members in the area in which the project is being carried out. Theoretically, we are developing the idea of a "culinary community" as a type of dense urban network of food producers, consumers and cultural intermediaries.

理由
The progress of this research has been largely better than planned, though uneven. Research is going more slowly in Shanghai than Tokyo, because the collaborators in Shanghai are a bit behind. I will take longer trips to Shanghai this year to further the progress of the project there. In Tokyo, the research has progressed extremely well, and we are already generating interest in the scholarly community in the work we are doing. NHK World is planning a special program about my work on Nishiogiology.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I intend to spend more time this next year in Tokyo developing this project in such as a way that a high quality (print) scholarly book can be ensured as an outcome. I have also decided to incorporate more videography into the online version of the project. As the mapping paradigm has developed, we have seen that users prefer to interact with video as well as still image and text. I plan to meet with scholars at New York University to work on improving the digital ethnographic mapping tools we are using.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
This past year the progress in Shanghai was a bit slower than planned. I will use more resources for the fieldwork trips in Shanghai this year. I will also increase the pace of the production of ethnographic case studies in Tokyo, using more resources for research assistance. The first year went a bit more slowly than expected because I needed to develop the platforms for presenting data and also the train research assistants.
|
次年度使用額の使用計画 |
There will be a longer trip to Shanghai. There will be training in videography to be used to expand the types of data recorded in the digital ethnography.I will involve more research assistants in the production of data in the Tokyo side of the project as well as the Shanghai side of the project. There will be a trip to New York University to work on developing the technologies of digital ethnographic mapping beyond those used in the webpage now.
