研究実績の概要 |
During FY2016, I have continued to development of oxygen isotopic measurements in silicates. The microfluorination device described in the original proposal was completed and most of the year was necessary to test the analysis protocols. As proposed, fluorine is required to extract oxygen from silicates but I found that carbon addition is also necessary to obtain reliable measurements. The most positive results is that precision (1 x standard deviation) is often better than anticipated, around 0.2 ‰. However, analytical time is longer than expected at this point, with only 3-5 samples analyzed per instrument day. Another positive result is that oxygen isotope composition obtained by fluorination technique is clearly different from the previous data without fluorination.

理由
Overall progress has been a bit slower than expected but temporary results a little better than expected, hence I assess the project’s progress as (2) Generally fine: 1) Progress has been a little slower than expected due to many technical difficulties with the instruments used (TCEA) 2) the method is now reasonably well established with analytical precision a little better than expected (0.2 ‰) 3) as expected, slow analytical speed clearly shows the need for automation (FY2017 target) 4) preliminary results show the possibility of using both isotopic analysis with and without fluorine from the same samples. The comparison of these 2 values may be useful for constraining temperature. This was not a expected result and this should be investigated.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
As originally planned for FY 2017, automation will be needed to be able to run more samples per day. This is especially important since many sample replications are needed to obtain satisfactory data. As method testing is finishing, I have just started analyzing samples and will continue this in FY2017. As a new potential development for this method, I will also investigate the comparison of isotopic composition of hydroxyl oxygen (traditional analysis with no fluorine) to Si-bonded oxygen (analysis with fluorine).

I have to carry over about 25,438 yen, because TCEA reactor and consumables turned out to be more reasonable than expected.
