研究実績の概要 |
Tautomerization (intramolecular hydrogen atom transfer) is an important process in organic chemistry and biology. By using atomic and intra-molecular resolution scanning probe microscopy, we are studying the tautomerization process in meso-dibenzoporphycene ―a molecule with potential for use in photodynamic therapy and as a molecular switch. Our main goals are to clarify the influence of the local environment (surface, presence of nearby atoms and molecules) in the tautomerization process, and to characterize the subtle charge differences expected for the cis and trans forms of the molecule by intra-molecular resolution Kelvin probe force microscopy.

理由
During FY2017 we decided to focus the research on the mDBPc molecules only on one metallic substrate: Ag(111). The reason behind this choice was that it is relatively easy to fabricate and regenerate an atomically sharp probe apex by wetting it with silver atoms, and because it is quite easy to vertically manipulate individual CO molecules from the Ag(111) surface to functionalize the probe apex. We grew islands of NaCl thin-film on the Ag(111) surface that were partially (~20%) covering it (see Fig.1). We deposited mDBPc molecules on such substate and studied them with both STM and AFM, using metallic and CO functionalized probes. We spent time trying to clarify the structure of the mDBPc molecule with the intramolecular resolution AFM capabilities provided by a functionalized CO probe. We have found remarkable differences between the molecules adsorbed on the metallic substrate and the ones found at the NaCl islands.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
During the last year of the project, we will characterize and clarify the differences found between the molecules adsorbed on the Ag(111) substrate and the ones on the NaCl islands. We will investigate whether the conformations we see are the cis or trans forms of the mDBPc molecule. We will try to induce the transition between them by applying voltage pulses at different locations of the molecules found in these substrates.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
There were technical problems with the microscope that required us to expend time of repairing it, and we could not expend the whole budget assigned on FY2017. We will use the budget transferred from the previous fiscal year, together with the budget granted for FY 2018, to perform the experiments at 5K on the mDBPc molecules mentioned above. Most of the budget will be use on the acquisition of liquid helium.
