研究実績の概要 |
The wild plant species closely related to crops are the greatest source of untapped diversity especially for adaptive characteristics. Low genetic diversity in cultivated species needs to expand the cultivation of domesticated species into environments beyond those under which domestication occurred, for example, into more extreme climates. We are addressing this need in chickpea, the world’s second most important pulse legume, by harnessing the capacity of wild relatives to survive in harsh environments. Effective use of wild germplasm requires a thorough knowledge of the population genetics and source habitats of the wild material, which will be addressed in this research. In the first fiscal year, morphological traits of seeds and habitat of eight species belongs to different geographical regions were studied. Three types of seed coat texture patterns were observed: (1) reticulate, (2) tuberculate, and (3) conical. Conical and tuberculate patterns seed type common in West-Central Asian species. Seeds didn’t germinate in the greenhouse. DNA therefore extracted from the seed samples of some species and sequence divergence of the cpDNA region was analyzed. The results from the phylogenetic analyses revealed three well-supported geographical groups: a Middle Eastern group, a West-Central Asian group, and an African group.

理由
The seeds did not germinate in the greenhouse due to changes of the greenhouse place in new campus. In this year, we will germinate seed of all species in the new greenhouse and evaluate the morphological traits.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the next fiscal year, the morphological evaluation of eight species will be continued. To understand genetic diversity and population structure of wild relative species, genomic analysis will be performed. I also plan to have field survey of two species, Cicer kermanese (endemic to Iran) and C. anatolicum (reported as an Endangered species in Armenia) in Iran and Turkey. This species observation will be used and help to inform and evaluate conservations actions.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The genomic approches and morphological evaluation will be necessary to understand the genetic divergence, population structure of wild relative species, and local adaptation. The species observation and population surveys will allow us to assess the conservation status of a species and the urgency of the conservation action required.
|
次年度使用額の使用計画 |
The major expenses will be required for genomic analysis and field survey. The travel expenses for attending and presenting a lecture in the conference are needed.
