The distantly related wild cousins (DWRC) of cultivated plants can be seen as a “huge natural mutagenesis resource” with novel gene variants that can increase productivity, quality, and adaptability. Nevertheless, distantly related wild species are given less priority and genomic tools reveal the secrets of the genetic potential of wild relatives to respond to a range of environments. We address this need in chickpea, an important legume, by harnessing the diversity of DWRC. In the second fiscal year, we analyzed morphological characters of the germinated seeds in greenhouse. The seeds of some species didn’t germinate. We therefore used morphological characters from the collected herbarium specimens from different herbaria. Phylogenetically related species from a geographical and habitat showed characteristic feature of the seed coat texture, leaves traits, and growth habit. Outcomes of the results will be presented in International conferences.

The ddRAD-seq generates a data set consisting of several thousand genetic markers distributed throughout coding and non-coding parts of the genome. These dataset as well as morphological and ecological data will allow for a fine-scale assessment of population structure, identify the relative importance of microevolutionary processes, and genomic composition of rare and threatened species. The major expenses will be required for genomic analysis. The travel expenses for participating in the conference are needed.
