Ecological and conservation value of wild perennial Cicer species has received less attention. Here we address this needs using RAD-seq, ecological and morphological traits. Phylogeny results of widespread and endemic species showed that phenotypic shifts associated with habitat shifts may be responsible for the diversity pattern in this genus. We propose that the endemic species may be adapted to a diversity of local conditions, but the widespread species are instead subject to ecological filtering where different combinations of genotypes persist under divergent ecological regimes.
