研究実績の概要 |
The purpose of this research project is to understand the impact of popular cinema on the views of everyday people living in the Kansai region in the early post-war period (1945-1970). This year, I have completed my initial fieldwork plan earlier than expected. I have collected 80 questionnaires and filmed 10 long interviews with film fans in the Kansai region. I am continuing to collect data through participant observation methods at two new field sites in Kyoto and Ibaraki shi, and by following key interlocutors through their daily lives. I am also using the archives of Kyoto University Library and Waseda University Tsubouchi Theatre Museum to contextualize my ethnographic data with published materials from the period under study. I have begun to publish my research findings in audiences studies journals and edited volumes organized by leading scholars in the field of Japanese Film Studies. I have presented my research findings at several international conferences including the Society for Cinema and Media Studies annual conference and at local symposia in the Kansai region. I have also written a first draft of the book manuscript for this project, and begun editing a short research film on the topic.

現在までの達成度 (区分) |
現在までの達成度 (区分)
1: 当初の計画以上に進展している
理由
I have been able to collect more questionnaire and interview responses than I had expected, and have been able to find more varied field sites than I had anticipated. I have also been able to write a first draft of my book manuscript more quickly than I had anticipated. I have had several book chapters and journal articles accepted this year, and these are on schedule to be published in FY2017.
|
今後の研究の推進方策 |
I will continue to collect data from my field sites and from archival collections in and outside Japan. I will finish editing my short film and screen it to participants to collect their feedback. When participants are happy with the film, I will enter it for exhibition in the film screening sections of international academic conferences such as the Association for Asian Studies and the American Anthropological Association annual conferences. I will also re-draft my book manuscript and begin approaching publishers, such as Duke University Press. I will continue to publish my research findings in peer-reviewed journals, and to present my research at international conferences.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
In FY2016, I was able to collect ethnographic data faster than I had expected, and was able to order and translate that data by myself. As I did not need extra research assistance, I did not spend the predicted amount on personnel. Furthermore, I was accepted to present at several conferences. For this reason, I used a greater percentage of my budget on personal travel, and did not pay any travel or honorarium for visiting scholars. I also needed fewer pieces of equipment than I had expected.
|
次年度使用額の使用計画 |
In FY2017, I plan to travel to a number of international conferences to present my research findings, collect feedback on my research and test my findings. I also plan to invite a number of leading scholars in the field of Japanese Film Studies to a symposium on Cinema and Social Change in Japan, to contextualize my findings. I will continue to collect ethnographic data, and to use archives around Japan and overseas for my research towards my book manuscript.I will use a significant percentage of the amount to travel to international conferences. I will also use a portion to pay for the travel and honorariums for invited speakers at the symposium I intend to organize. I will require a small amount of funds for domestic travel for conferences and to visit archives.
