In April 2017, I gave a presentation on the translation strategies of the German poet Hans Magnus Enzensberger. This marked the final phase of a book project on the poetry translations from Spanish by Erich Arendt and Hans Magnus Enzensberger. The monograph, entitled Brotherly Egoists: Poetry Translations from Spanish by Erich Arendt and Hans Magnus Enzensberger, was published by Winter University Press (Heidelberg) in November 2017 and co-funded with the research funds from the JSPS. I also contributed a dictionary entry on the term translation to the Dictionary of Originality and Copying (forthcoming), edited by Eberhard Ortland, Reinold Schuecker and Thomas Dreier. Furthermore, I submitted an article, entitled “Making Paper Liquid: Thoughts on Erasure and Translation in the Poetry of Uljana Wolf” for the journal Formes Poetiques Contemporaines, and finished revising another version of an article that explores the intertwined literary conditions of surface translation and conceptual art in the context of the works of recent German-speaking poets. The article will be published in an edited volume on homophonic translation, which was recently postponed from 2017 to 2018.

Also in its second year, the research project was conducted according to the research plan, which is structured along the theoretical framework of the project, i.e., the descriptive categories of experimental writing, translation and praxeology. The research project during this period basically focused on two things: balancing an intensive writing process (April 2017 - July 2017; January 2018 - March 2018) with two longer research stays in Germany from August to September and in December, and ultimately combining the two. After conducting interviews with authors, poets, publishers, literary scholars, and curators, it became more and more evident that German poetry in the 20th and 21st century engages with theories and practices of translation to turn upon itself through its own self-transgression. This is one of the key findings of my research project, which is also reflected in my publications.

Again, as in the first and the second year, I will ensure conducting the study adheres closely to the research plan. The most important milestone of the third year will be another research stay in Germany from August to the beginning of October, which will be very demanding in time and resources. Not only will I continue meeting with authors, scholars, publishers, literary editors, curators and poets that are part of my research corpus in various locations (e. g., Berlin, Leipzig, Munich, Vienna), but also, even more so than in the second year, conduct extensive library and archival research. This April, I have already seen the fruits of some of my labours as we held a workshop with the poet Ann Cotten at the University of Osaka. I am still planning a symposium on Contemporary German-speaking poetry in Osaka, inviting poets, publishers, Japanese and international researchers as a closure of the project. The other main purpose of the third year of the research project will be finishing a longer essay on intermedial translation (May 2018; January - March 2019) that I have started working on in the second year.
