In 2019, in cooperation with Christina Sagioglou (Innsbruck University), I carried out a web survey in Japan (N = 738), US (N = 712) and Germany (N = 708) to investigate the relationship between objective and subjective social status (SSES) and subjective well-being (SWB), using relative deprivation (RD) as possible mediator. The Comprehensive Inventory of Thriving (CIT) and the Interdependent Happiness Scale were used to control for cultural construals of SWB. The CIT was translated into Japanese and used in the Japanese context for the first time for this purpose. Our first results indicate that RD is the strongest predictor of SWB in all countries. SSES and financial security are significant, but weaker than RD. Japanese SWB is more strongly affected by both RD and SSES than German and US SWB. Results of our survey are accepted for presentation at international conferences in summer 2020 (unless postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic). At the same time, we are preparing the publication of our results in form of several articles. We will add information on future publications as soon as they appear.
A second focus was placed on the analysis of a German-Japanese student survey carried out in 2018 in cooperation with Wolfgang Jagodzinski (et al.), University of Cologne, and Kazufumi Manabe, Aoyama Gakuin. In this part of the project, we look at social values and their relationship with SWB in international comparison. As first step towards this comparison we tested our scales for measurement invariance.
