The purpose of this project was to understand the relationship between lattice strain and the association of defect on the conductivity of ionic conductors for solid oxide fuel cell applications. We have successfully demonstrated the modification of the conductivity as a function of lattice strain which is in excellent agreement with previous published results. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that by changing the size of the dopant cations, and thereby modifying the defect association, we can induce a much larger change in the conductivity than in state-of-the-art ionic conductors. This has important implication for electrolytes in fuel cells at low temperatures and for ionic-based memory applications operating at ambient conditions.
