For implant placement, some patients require bone augmentation; recently a new method for tissue regeneration involves the use of microRNAs (miRNAs). microRNAs are small non-coding RNA molecule, that functions in RNA silencing and post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. The miRNA family have an abundant number of regulatory molecules that play an important role regulating local cell to cell communication in situ, but also at distant sites moving throughout the blood stream. Gene expression microarray is a powerful tool capable of monitoring the expression of thousands of genes. However, due to miRNA’s nature; such as small total number and low expression, the analysis was not able to provide a reliable profiling. Like most analytical platforms, errors can be introduced in almost every step in the process of acquiring and analyzing microarray data. Researchers should try to stay with as few platforms as possible, due to the low reproducibility among arrays across platforms and/or across laboratories. The diversity of miRNA microarray platforms and lack of reliable analytical methods have made miRNA microarray data comparison and integration challenging. It is suggested to ensure the measurement quality by controlling the experimental factors and background signal subtraction without normalization for miRNA microarray data. Measurement errors are common in microarray experiments and conclusions based on microarray data without proper normalization might be misleading.
