研究実績の概要 |
In 2016 the focus of the research has been put on literature review on vulnerability analyses and climate change. In studying vulnerability to climate change, researchers study exposure/sensitivity, resilience and adaptation strategy. Among various models, the place-based framework that model operationalized vulnerability is useful for understanding the specificity of place and for directing attention to the condition of coupled human-environment system. The results of studies conducted this year have been presented in the 6th Annual Conference of the Japan Association for Human Security Studies, as well as in the 54th Academic Conference of Chinese Scholars Association (Ibukai). The researcher has also attended the conference - Leadership: Opportunities for BRICS in Global Affairs - held by Yale University for gathering information on climate change related policies, and has conducted meeting with former IITA scientist for gathering updated information on vegetation and agricultural practices change in Nigeria.

理由
Research in 2016 has been slighted delayed because the researcher judges that more funding would be necessary for a well-planned and organized fieldwork and questionnaire survey to be conducted in Nigeria. Part of the funding of 2016 will be shifted to 2017 for this purpose. Besides, as the researcher has been conducting fieldwork in Nigeria continuously for several years, time has been allocated to data entry and documentation of accumulated information. The organized data and information will be utilized for the research activities to be conducted in 2017 and 2018.
|
今後の研究の推進方策 |
In 2017, a participatory vulnerability and capacity assessment to climate change will be conducted on pastoralists in central Nigeria. Climate factors that are important to pastoralists’livelihoods and pastoralists’knowledge on their variability and capacity to adapt or migrate will be identified. Fieldwork will be conducted for collecting relevant and detailed data. Two to three pastoral Fulani lineage groups will be targeted for the study for comparison and to identify if there are differences among their adaption strategies and vulnerability. In 2018, articles for publications will be developed and submitted to reputable journals. Research results will be presented in conferences in Nigeria, Japan and other oversea countries.
