研究実績の概要 |
Despite the researcher could not visit Nigeria in 2018 due to political instability, the questionnaire survey have been successfully conducted on 68 pastoral groups through the earnest assistance by local researchers. The survey collected socio-economic data, movement history, climate change experience, land accessibility, cattle health management and adaptive strategy of pastoralists. The core pastoral group keeps recording diary on daily grazing activity and cattle management for over a year. These data were gathered and sent to the researcher in Japan. Meteorological data of 1950s to 2016 were also collected and being analyzed. Two presentations on theoretical background and mid-term finding results were delivered in international meetings, and a book chapter has been produced.

理由
The researcher could not conduct fieldwork in Nigeria as planned due to political instability. Because the researcher has started working in a new institution from April 2018, there was insufficient time to prepare for fieldwork in August. A fieldwork was thus planned in March 2019 to collect the completed survey and other records. However, the sudden postponement of the general election of Nigeria made the security risk to travel in the country highly uncertain. There was no choice but to cancel the travel. Fortunately the local research assistants have diligently carried out their tasks as requested. The materials were collected and sent to Japan with the help by researchers of the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM) of Nigeria.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
A follow up fieldwork in Nigeria is planned for September 2019. The main purpose will be to conduct the Climate Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (CVCA) on part of the survey informants so as to get more details of local impacts of climate change. Based on primary analysis of the questionnaire findings, climate change has imposed a great stress to cattle health and outbreak of diseases was recorded. It is necessary to gather more information on cattle health management from pastoralists, and from governmental departments at different levels (local, state, national). The researcher also hopes to visit research institutes in Nigeria that monitor climate change, such as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency. Articles for publication will be developed and submitted to reputable journals.
