研究実績の概要 |
Most empirical studies had been limited to discuss the extent to which factors of L2 motivation interact with other individual differences (e.g., learning styles and strategies, anxiety, willingness to communicate). Limited attention has been paid to the role of social factors or dispositional factors (such as personality traits) in L2 motivational processes. Thus, this study concerns which factors (i.e., sociocultural factors or dispositional factors such as personality traits), better explain language learning motivation. The research for fiscal year 2016 investigated self-related dimensions in the L2 (second language) motivational processes among students who learned two different languages in Japan. The proposed research considers to what extent social factors and personality factors affect motivational processes for learning two different languages. During fiscal year 2016, a pilot study consisting of two questionnaires (a closed ended and an open-ended questionnaire) were administered to approximately 200 students (open-ended for 20 students). This process was undertaken to improve the questionnaire scales based on Cronbach alpha analyses. Brief correlational analyses and structural equation modelling also was undertaken to examine the relationships among all of the questionnaire subscales.

理由
Questionnaires were successfully administered to approximately 200 students as a pilot study and meaningful correlational relationships between some subscales were obtained. However, some subscales on personality traits and cultural factors did not obtain good reliability and were removed from further analysis. Modifications to these questionnaire items will be necessary for the next steps of questionnaire development.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
For the second year of this project, the modified questionnaires will again be administered to university students who will learn two languages. Analyses will be undertaken using SPSS and EQS to observe 1) how the relationship between social/dispositional factors and students’ motivational processes and L2 motivated learning behavior will be different between the two languages, and 2) which factors, sociocultural factors or dispositional factors, better explain each language learning motivation.
