研究実績の概要 |
In 2017, two types of data were collected: 1) a quantitative questionnaire, which investigated the relationships among motivation, self-related orientations, sociocultural factors, and other individual differences, was administered to learners of English and other foreign languages in the Japanese context, 2) with respect to the time perspectives and English proficiency, a qualitative open-ended questionnaire was administered to observe 20 learners’ internal process of developing the concept of self in relation to the sociocultural context in Japan. Some obtained results include the following: 1) between the two different languages, learners’ motivation, social factors, other individual differences and concept of self were interrelated with each other in a complex way, and 2) the concept of self for Japanese learners was more broad and inclusive such that Japanese learners included perceptions and values from important persons into their self. These developing processes were also different between learners with higher English proficiency levels and those with lower English proficiency levels. Also, the questionnaire items on personality, which did not show sufficient reliability in 2016, were modified this year.

理由
I was on maternity leave from the end of May 2017. Therefore, I had to cancel most of the data collection, analysis and so forth, which was originally planned for 2017.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Two types of data were collected in April and May, 2017. I will collect additional data on the same topic to obtain a sufficient sample size. I will also present these data at an international conference in 2018. Also, modified items on personality were recently prepared, therefore I will administer another questionnaire during the Fall semester of 2018.
