The original project was expected to be finished by 2019. Due to COVID, the funding was extended to 2020. During FY 2020, the main achievements are as follows:
1. Implementing a survey investigating foreign employees' career experiences in Japan and how their work might have been influenced by COVID. Considering the mobility restrictions, this project team decided to use the rest of the research funding for a quantitative survey to provide a statistical picture of foreign employees' employment patterns, their job satisfaction levels, their future plans, and the influences of COVID on their employment. Through a survey company, we have managed to collect 600 samples of foreign employees. This data will supplement the qualitative data we have collected.
2. Publication efforts: a) During this year, I co-edited a book titled "Tangled Mobilities: Place, Affect, and Personhood Across Social Spheres in Asian Migration" with Asuncion Freznosa-Flot. In this book, I used the data collected in Germany and Japan for this project to write a chapter titled "Emotions, Places, and Mobilities: the Affective Drives of the Migration and Settlement Aspirations among Highly Educated Migrants." 2) In addition, using the data from this project, I have co-authored a paper with researchers from University of Birmingham comparing the effects of immigration policy on labor market and vice versa in both the UK and Japan.
