研究実績の概要 |
[1] Advertised within the University for Christian and Muslim participants, and then arranged five videoed discussions (about 90 minutes each) between Muslim and Christian Indonesians, and produced a written transcription of their discourse. [2] Arranged for consulting researchers Pihlaja (from Newman University in the UK) and Kheovichai (from Silpakorn University, Bangkok, Thailand) to visit Hokkaido University for a series of meetings. These meetings involved detailed discussions of the videoed data and its relation to global trends connected to attitudes towards different religions, and also included planning future collaborations on the topics of religion, risk, danger, and dialogue in a global context. [3] Completed one article (authored by Richardson and Pihlaja) related to the risk of particular interpretations of Biblical texts in our modern global context, “Killing In the Name: Contemporary Evangelical Christian interpretations of the Jericho massacre in the context of anti-immigration and anti-Muslim trends”, and had it peer reviewed and accepted for publication in the next issue (volume 8, No 1) of the journal Postscripts: The Journal of Sacred Texts and Contemporary Worlds.

理由
Recently completed two new articles on key aspects of our research. The first relates to how Buddhists and Christians in the US identify and manage danger, and the second relates to how internationally recognized New Atheists and Christians view each other as dangerous. These articles are currently under review with Cognitive Linguistic Studies and Metaphor and Symbol and we are preparing to respond to the feedback we receive from them. An abstract based on the first of these articles has been accepted for the International Cognitive Linguistics Conference in July, 2017, so the paper for the conference preparation is currently being prepared. We are also currently organizing study sessions of the transcript from the Muslim-Christian discussions in order to decide on the structure of a planned article on risk and dialogue between Indonesian Muslims and Christians and its connection to global trends towards protectionism.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
We are planning to complete our collaborative research on Muslim and Christian relationships in Indonesia and their possible connection to global attitudes relating to populism and protectionism, leading to the submission of a multi-authored article in the discourse analysis journal Text and Talk within the next 12 months. Within the same time frame, we are also planning to complete and submit for publication a second article on the topic of Steve Bannon’s views on radical Islam and global conflict. We are also hoping to establish useful relationships with key academics at the International Cognitive Linguistics Conference in July 2017 that will allow us to plan new collaborative partnerships.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The kakenhi grant wasn't activated until the end of July 2016, so we had a reduced period of time to spend the allotted amount. We initially had a plan to have an international meeting in January 2016 and collect the necessary research materials such as books and articles. However, we had to postpone the date of the meeting because of the limited time period and the fact that we needed more time to complete the transcript for the Muslim-Christian discussions. .

次年度使用額の使用計画 |
We have now used the allotted funds to pay for the planned research meeting with the international collaborators, and we plan to use the remaining funds to take part in various conferences including the International Cognitive Linguistics Conference in Estonia in 2017 and to pay for the technical formatting of the currently raw transcription files, as well as other expected research expenses.
