研究実績の概要 |
[1] Completed an analysis of the transcription of the videoed discussion between an Indonesian Christian and Muslim on the subject of Ahok’s trial. Based on the analysis of the data, we have produced a collaborative paper involving all the members of the project and submitted it to the journal Text and Talk. The submission is currently under review. [2] Our Cognitive Linguistic Studies submission, Perceptions of danger and co-occurring metaphors in Buddhist dhamma talks and Christian sermons, was accepted and revisions were completed and submitted. The article is expected to appear in the first 2018 issue of the journal in June. [3] Completed all final revisions for a Metaphor and Social World article entitled An investigation of the blocking and development of empathy in discussions between Muslim and Christian believers. The article was based on an analysis of videoed conversations between 3 pairs of Muslims and Christians at the University of Birmingham. It was published in the July 2017 special issue, Metaphor in religion and spirituality, which was edited by Pihlaja. [4] Pihlaja also contributed one article to that special issue on the topic of how Christians recontextualize metaphors when talking about Bible stories. He also published an article in Discourse, Context and Media about how Muslims are often positioned in stereotypical terms, and has published a book analyzing the way religious believers and atheists communicate with each other online.

理由
[1] Two abstracts have been accepted for the conference in Toronto: The Opening up of Koyasan in the Age of Globalization: A Study of Temple Lodgings (presentation) and Debating blasphemy: positioning and power dynamics in emotive face-to-face interaction (distributed paper). We are currently preparing material for both the presentation and the distributed paper. [2] Another abstract, Blasphemy and dialogue: applying positioning theory to pre-discussion essays and face-to-face interaction on the topic of Ahok’s trial, has also been accepted for the 2018 PALA conference, so we are also preparing for that talk. [3] In addition, we are working on gathering and analyzing data in preparation for two planned collaborative journal submissions. The first relates to the above research on how various Shukubo have adapted or refused to adapt themselves to foreign tourists, while the second relates to an analysis of the notion of danger in the dhamma talks of two prominent Thai monks, Buddhadasa Bhikkhu and Ajahn Chah. [4] We are also analyzing data from a debate between Richard Dawkins and John Lennox in preparation for completing and submitting a paper to the journal Metaphor and Symbol about how atheists and Christians use movement metaphors to evaluate the other participant’s ideas as dangerous.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
We are planning to complete and submit the three papers alluded to above on research related to Shukubo, Thai dhamma talks, and the Dawkins-Lennox debate. In addition, we plan to begin discussing a collaborative book consisting of an edited collection of chapters drawing together all the research we have been focusing on so far. One proposed unifying topic underpinning this collection would be hope and danger in interactions with and between religious believers. We also hope to get invaluable feedback and form useful relationships from the two conference trips to Birmingham and Toronto and the symposium on strategies for religious dialogue in Sweden. Finally, Pihlaja is currently putting together a proposal for a comprehensive edited collection of chapters on the topic of language and religion for Cambridge University Press. The plan is still in the proposal stage, but Pihlaja's ultimate aim is to define what could be viewed as a new field of language and religion. Another member of the kakenhi project has been invited to contribute the chapter on cognitive linguistic approaches to analyzing religious language if the proposal is accepted.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
We were planning to present our findings on our research this year. However, the analysis and writing up stages took longer than we expected, so we have moved our conference presentations to the next academic year.
