研究実績の概要 |
The book "Cognitive Linguistics and Religious Language", which discusses and ties together many of the articles previously published in connection with this kakenhi project, was published in March 2021. We are hoping that this book will become one of the main texts that researchers draw on when analyzing religious language from a Cognitive Linguistic perspective. The article comparing a Christian and Jodo-shinshu Buddhist text from a Cognitive Linguistic perspective is also now in the final stages of publication and we are hoping that it will appear in this year's edition of the journal Cognitive Linguistic Studies. In addition, the final editing phase for our book chapter on the subject of cognition in the Cambridge University Press edited collection "Analyzing Religious Discourse" has been completed. The editor of the book, Stephen Pihlaja, is also associated with the kakenhi project. The book will be published in July of this year. A comparison between Buddhism and Christianity focusing on their modal usage is being carried out. This research uses a computational linguistic approach based on large collections of texts from each of these religions. Since modals often reveal subtle differences in writers' attitudes, we are hoping to find previously undiscovered, deep differences and similarities between these two religious sects.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
Our aim at the beginning of the kakenhi project was to publish several relevant articles before attempting to produce a book that connects together many of the themes explored in the articles. The book "Cognitive Linguistics and Religious Language: An Introduction" fulfills that initial ambitious goal.
We are also collecting data using Wordsmith and Atlas ti text analysis tools for an analysis of modality in a corpus of Christian and Buddhist texts.
|
今後の研究の推進方策 |
Our goal is to complete our analysis of the Christian and Buddhist texts and to submit it for publication in an international journal connected to corpus linguistics before the end of this kakenhi project.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
We could not use amount originally allocated for research trips, both domestic and foreign, due to Covid 19; this incurred amount to be used next fiscal year. Our plan for using the funds for 2021-2022 involves the purchase of office equipment (connectors for the MacBook Air), a new laptop, and books that are relevant to our analysis of modality in Buddhist and Christian texts and the principles related to discourse analysis and religion.
