「温度感受性受容体(TRP)と高齢者誤嚥」の関係に従事した。「嚥下反射と食事の温度の関係」(J Am Ceriatr Soc 2004; 54)に基づき、熱温度刺激に反応するTRPV1の作動薬のカプサイシンの慢性刺激も上気道防御反射を改善した。冷感の温度受容体であるTRPM8作動薬のメンソールの嚥下反射改善効果は(Brit. J Clin. Pharmacol 2006; 62)、産学共同製品として2007年9月より、既に臨床現場で誤嚥予防食として使用されている。黒胡椒精油を用いた嗅覚刺激による上気道防御反射の改善効果を示したか(J. Am. Geriat. Soc. 2006; 54)、この成果を基礎に、新規のドラッグガスデリバリーシステムとして、この芳香成分を炭素に吸着させ、首周辺に貼るだけで24時間、誤嚥予防できるパッチシートを開発した(産学共同製品、H19年3月より実用化)。以上より、できるだけ最後まで、経口摂取を可能にする、食の楽しみを維持する「科学的見地に基づいた介護」的アプローチを見出した。また、円背や食道裂孔ヘルニア罹患の高齢者に多くみられる「胃食道逆流と誤嚥の関係」を明らかにした。嚥下反射はPHと負相関を持ち(Geriatr & Gerontol International 2007; 7)、咳感受性の亢進はプロトンポンプ阻害剤で正常化する(J. Am. Geriat. Soc. 2007; 55)。そして、胃切除例において、一年間の期間で、セロトニン受容体作動薬モサプリド内服群は非内服群と比較し肺炎発症を抑制した(J.Am.Geriat.Soc.2007;55)。以上より、胃切除例や食道裂孔ヘルニア有者の肺炎は、嚥下反射が正常でも胃酸の逆流が原因である可能性が高い。従来の誤嚥対策(ACE阻害剤、ドーパミン遊離促進剤)ではないアプローチが重要であることが示唆された。
