研究実績の概要 |
Frederick has been continuing instrument development research for the Simons Observatory (SO) CMB experiment. He has been in charge of the optical design development of the small aperture telescopes (SATs) that Japan and USA will develop and deploy by 2021. He designed the SAT refractive optics design, and assessed the optical capabilities and systematics of the design through geometric and physical optics simulations. The SATs are in the fabrication phase, and Frederick has further re-optimized the refractive optics design based off the results of systematics studies as well as in order to accommodate for unexpected fabrication errors. He also developed the SAT platform baffling and shielding optics design, used to minimize stray light systematics. Frederick has also continued organizing the SO weekly meetings for the Japanese collaborators and has been taking initiative to make the Japanese research contribution greater in the international collaboration. He has organized 4 quarterly face-to-face meetings in Japan within the last fiscal year. He also attended a SO full collaboration meeting held in the USA, and also presented SO talks at JPS and ASJ conferences. Frederick has also been aiding in the deployment of the Simons Array (SA) CMB experiment to Chile. The first of the SA receivers deployed to Chile at the end of 2018. He aided in the final lab testing in Japan of the receiver instrument, and was deeply involved in the deployment planning of the instrument in order to prepare it for CMB observations. He attended a SA full collaboration meeting held in the USA.

理由
The development of the SO SATs has been proceeding as planned with only minor delays. The main optical and mechanical design of the SATs have finished, and now we are in the fabrication phase of the first SAT in Japan and USA. Japan is in charge of the fabrication of the SAT optics tube (OT) component that contains all the central optical components of the refractive telescope including the lenses, cryogenic baffles, and filters. Frederick is currently contributing to the assembly and testing of the OT components that have recently finished fabrication. Several OT components are currently being assembled at IPMU by Frederick and other collaborators. This process not only includes the physical assembly, but also metrology to test that the alignment of the optical components are accurate to within less than 1 mm, and also fabrication of the cryogenic baffles and absorber materials that line the inner OT walls. Frederick is also currently planning and assessing the requirements for the optical tests through calculating optical simulations of the OT. These tests will occur in the next few months. Frederick is also currently involved in the fabrication development of the SAT platform and shielding exterior to the instrument. He is currently assessing optical systematics of the platform mechanical design to provide design feedback to the platform vendors. Frederick is also working on the mechanical design of the fore-baffle that will be installed on the exterior of the SAT in order to reduce stray light systematics.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
With the SAT fabrication proceeding as planned in SO, Frederick will continue to work on the development, assembly, and testing of the first SAT OT in Japan for the next 6 months. The first OT is planned to be finished by the end of the 2019 calendar year in order to be installed in the SAT receiver in the USA early next year. Frederick is in charge of the OT optical testing at IPMU that is planned to occur within the next 2 or 3 months, and will continue to work on the testing plan and measurement itself. He will also aid in the metrology alignment measurements as well as the blackbody absorber development which is currently ongoing at IPMU. Other than OT R&D, Frederick will also continuing working on the mechanical design development of the SAT fore-baffle, and will also proceed with the fore-baffle fabrication in the H31 fiscal year. Frederick is also continuously involved in the optical systematics assessment of the entire SAT system to provide feedback for the SO analysis pipeline development. Frederick is planned to attend a SO full collaboration meeting and SA full collaboration in July 2019 in the USA for further development work on both CMB experiments.
