研究実績の概要 |
This project examines the cinematic works and theoretical writings of a seminal Japanese screenwriter and film director Shindo Kaneto (1912-2012). Shindo's work serves as a gateway for addressing such recurring themes in the postwar Japanese cinema as war trauma, social discrimination and relationship between sexuality and politics. The main objectives of the project are 1) to provide the first comprehensive study of Shindo's screen works; 2) to situate Shindo's work within the context of several trends in world cinema; 3) to forge a new way to look at film authorship and agency through examining Shindo's multiple roles; 4) to place Shindo's theoretical work on screenwriting in the global context; 5) to evaluate the role of film festivals in the international reception of Shindo's films. I spent the first eight months of the project (September 2017-March 2018) analysing Shindo's screen works and their screenplays. I have already had the chance to present the results of this research activity. In March 2018, I delivered a paper, titled ‘Libidinal economies in liminal spaces: Shindo; Kaneto’s Onibaba and its lineages,’ at the annual meeting of the Association for Asian Studies at Washington, DC. An article, titled ‘Of potatoes and poetics: revisiting Shindo Kaneto’s The Naked Island,’ that I completed and submitted in February 2018 is currently being reviewed by a top peer-reviewed journal.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The second year of the project (April 2018-March 2019) will be devoted to Shindo's writings on film history and theories of screenwriting. I also plan to carry out a series of interviews with people associated with him while making regular research trips to the National Film Archive of Japan, Tsubouchi Shoyo Memorial Theatre Museum at Waseda University, and the National Diet Library as well as Onomichi Eiga Shiryokan. I plan to give at least one refereed presentation at an international conference.
